Grab your lance and nock your arrows.

Hold your sword up high.

As she sang, Alner’s steps and sword began to meet with the music, synchronizing in turn. The rhythm was deliberate and accentuated, and as Alner joined with its pattern, Sabra felt the immediate urge to move along with him.

For to war we have been called,

And now we’re going nigh.

“It’s a dance!” Sabra exclaimed as Alner continued to move to Maria’s song.

As she spoke, a new sensation filled the air. The hairs on her arms tingled. Her skin wasn’t wet. She knew that. And yet, her arms and face and other areas with exposed skin could feel the air. She could feel the drops of moisture separating from the dry air as the morning sun rose. The smells around her were accented. Time seemed to slow. Every sensation was heightened. But somehow, that wasn’t even the most impressive part.

As the song progressed, Alner’s sword moved faster until he was truly doing what looked like a dance of death, driving a very startled George back as he did. And as he did, blue fire swirled around his blade. Sabra heard George gasp at the same time she did. Some part of her wanted to look at him and see his response to such a display, but the flames were mesmerizing, and she couldn’t look away.

And then, in one swift movement, he’d stripped George of his sword, and the fight was over. Maria stopped singing, and Sabra’s senses returned to normal. Still, she felt frozen in time. Seeming oblivious to the change around them, or perhaps just used to it, Alner carefully placed the sword back on its wall hooks. George picked up his sword and slowly walked back up the stairs.

“The lullaby,” George whispered as he came to stand next to Sabra. His eyes were distant as he stared at his weapon, his chest still heaving.

Sabra turned to look at him. “Lullaby?”

He nodded, looking up at Maria. “You sang me to sleep with that song for years,” he whispered.

“Of course we did.” Everyone turned to see Alner coming up the stairs. “You needed to know the Sentinel’s Song.”

“Sentinel’s Song,” George repeated slowly.

Alner wiped the sweat from his brow. “The Fortier prince wanted to pass the art of battle on to his sons. So he and his wife took one of the ancient songs of the Fortiers and moved it to a cadence that matched their forms. They realized not long after that the Maker had chosen to use it for them as well. The song serves to kindle the power within.”

George said nothing. Once again, he was wearing the impassive mask on his face as he stared down at the sword he still held.

“There are several others,” Maria added. She bent to pick up Thing, who had twined himself around her ankles. “But this is the one every Sentinel child learns from birth up.”

“Do the girls have the gift as well?” Sabra asked, giving Thing a dirty look.
