Chapter 13

I’D NEVER REALIZED how cool it was to be Daenerys Targaryan. All that flying around on dragons – in my past life, my skeptical attitude had always made me think it was something unpleasant and frightening. Or just not normal. But as soon as Little Bald began to climb above the forest and give a couple of flaps of his great wings to pick up speed, I forgot all about any negative thoughts. It was… Well, it was fucking amazing! A headwind tried to throw us off his back, but we clung on to each other with death grips. My three goblin ducklings squealed unstoppably, while Gor swore loudly in a language known only to him, but even the company couldn’t prevent me from enjoying the flight. The speed. The smoothness. The power. I was in heaven.

It took Little Bald an hour to fly a distance that it would previously have taken us at least a day to cover. Sure, by the end he was flagging a little – he flapped his wings more sparingly, he was beginning to shake us up, and we flew closer and closer to the ground. But my pet made it nonetheless. He flew over several goblin villages, the residents of which could only stare up at us. Neither their arrows nor their magic could reach us.

The level of energy around us began to increase. The three feathered goblins got nervous – it wasn’t just the flying that was making them nauseous now. It was like I first time in the Dungeon. Never mind, I had a great remedy for that particular ailment.

“Eat these!” I said, handing each of them a gemstone. Of course, it would greatly reduce the effect of the radiation, and hence the XP they received, but it would keep them alive. Dead goblins don’t level up.

Finally came the moment when Little Bald was completely out of breath. For a while, he managed to keep gliding just above the ground, scraping it with his stomach, but then he flopped completely, turned back into his little dracat form, turned belly up, and demonstrated clearly that he was out of commission for the immediate future.

“Good boy!” I said gratefully, lifting him up in my arms. “Who’s the best little dracat? I’m proud of you!”

This seemed to help – Little Bald stopped groaning and even started to meow a little less dejectedly. Finally, he quieted down completely and fell asleep. An hour’s flight with an extra load in the form of three feather-covered goblins was excellent exercise, and he’d get used to it soon enough. But I’d tell him that later when he’d had a good rest.

My three first-time flyers didn’t look so great, however. Somehow, their feathers were still in place, but they’d gone even more green than usual underneath them, and they were unsteady on their feet. Naively, they thought I’d let them get away with feeling under the weather – no chance! I nodded to them, and Lyra understood me immediately. A few doses of healing, and my future porters were much better.
