Ten minutes later Heather was ringing my doorbell. It was good timing. I had just finished unpacking the glassware. I opened the door and let her in. She looked like a hot mess, holding my red rose and sobbing. She was wearing a white T-shirt, black Lululemon sweatpants with a pink Boston Red Sox baseball cap.

“Oh, honey,” I said, giving her hug. “What’s wrong?”

“He wants a divorce,” she replied, weeping.

“What?” I startled. “Come on in and sit down. I’ll get the Kleenex.”

I grabbed a box of Kleenex from the bathroom and we settled on the sofa. Heather handed me the red rose, which I set down on the coffee table. It was still a vibrant red color, but droopy and lifeless.

“Thanks. Here,” I said, handing her a tissue.

“He said that he doesn’t love me anymore,” she said, dabbing her eyes with the tissue.

“Oh no!” I groaned. “I’m so sorry.”

“He’s been wanting to tell me for some time, but was afraid to,” she explained.

“Coward! Bastard!” I said. “He didn’t want to try to make it work?”

“No. He said he’d been trying, and it wasn’t working. Which is bullshit.”

“Is there someone else?” I asked.

“No. Maybe… I don’t know. I asked him, but he was very evasive. He kept saying that this was about us.”

“I hate that, when they’re evasive like that.”

“I never thought this would happen to me,” she said. “This happens to other people. Right?”

“I know. I felt that way too,” I said.

“That’s not even the worst of it,” she muttered.

“Why? What else happened?”

“Well, when I got home Friday night I wanted to do something different and surprise him. You know, to spruce things up and extend an olive branch. So I stripped down in the foyer,” she explained. “But when I walked into the living room he didn’t look all that happy to see me. Boy, did I feel like an idiot, standing there in the nude.”

Heather was silent for a moment. I could see her mind racing, experiencing a myriad of emotions. I was respectful of her silence.

“He said what are you doing and told me to go put some clothes on,” she continued. “I never felt so humiliated in all of my life.”

Heather cried angry, frustrated tears.

I sat there in silent support of her, and politely handed her another tissue.

“So, what’re you going to do?” I asked.

“Well, he said he wanted to separate immediately. So he’s planning on taking an apartment in town near his office.”

“When’s he moving out?”

“Soon. He’s staying at a hotel until he finds a place.”

“Are you going to stay in the house?”

“I’m not sure. I like Stoughton,” she replied. “I’ve got some big decisions to make, like getting a good lawyer.”

“That sucks,” I said. “Believe me, I know. I’ve been there.”

“What did you do when it happened with you and Tom?”

“Well, Tom was out of work, so it was a little different,” I said. “I wanted him out of the house. You know, after his affair with what’s-her-name. So I told him to go live with his parents.
