The Conditions of Silence: Rippling Codes of Silence and Cultural Betrayal

The meaning and purpose of silence fluctuated for black women as they navigated shifting visibility conditions, power relations, and contexts. Faced with the risk of police retaliation and intracommunal backlash, they had to make strategic decisions about whether it was safe and worth their effort to speak about violence. I therefore situate their choices to speak about violence, from the police and others, in the interrelated police and community codes that promote and enforce silence.
