ten

Twenty-two seconds.

Could bombs detonate in water?

It was a confusing question. Olive couldn't think of a single example of that happening in her training, but she didn't want to experience it for the first time in real life. The timer kept ticking. What should she do? There wasn't time to get out of her weight belt, let alone to get to the surface and warn anyone what was about to happen.

Fourteen seconds.

The timer was ticking way too fast.

She'd have to disarm it.

Olive tried to take her last ragged breath of oxygen, but there was no usable air left in her rig. She sputtered. It took everything she had to hold on to the little oxygen she had in her system. She squeezed her eyes shut and cleared her mind to stop the panic.

All she had to do was find the source of the input on the bomb, then she could short out the timer by pulling it away from the explosive. She'd done plenty of similar de-escalation dry-runs in the S.P.Y. Academy training facility. Only, in practice, she wasn’t also holding her breath, under a football field of water, with giant space gloves impeding her fingers!

Didn’t matter. She could do this.

Olive followed the red wire out of the black display box.

Ten seconds.

She squeezed her eyes together, then opened them.

If only she had more oxygen.

The red wire entered the body of the box, then there were two other wires connecting the terminal to the explosives, one green and one blue. Which one was the intake?

Eight seconds.

Lewiston would know which one to pull.

Olive needed more oxygen.

Lewiston!

Olive thought of him, fondly. He was sitting on the pool's edge, waiting for her. With Phil, and chipmunk-faced Lydia and countless other campers too. They were all there, sitting patiently, with no idea their lives were in her hands. She had to stop the timer before the bomb took out the whole camp. But what she really needed was just a little bit of oxygen. Just one more breath.

Six seconds.

How had the time ticked away so fast?

Which wire?

Where was the intake?

Her eyes blurred. Find the wire, she told herself.

Oxygen, said another voice.

Olive tried to bring her thoughts together.

Suddenly there was a white cloud around her. An angel was coming to take her.

No, Olive thought.

She wasn't finished. She had to pull the right wire. She had to save the day.

She had to find the oxygen.

No wait, the intake. Find the intake.

Find the wire, the angel told her.

Lewiston, Olive worried.

Kitty, her jumbled mind said.

The angel lifted his white arms to his head and removed his halo.

Five seconds.

Not yet, Olive thought.

If only she could breathe again.

“Pull the intake,” someone told her.

Townsend?

No, she was losing her grip on the bomb. It was floating. Her body was floating. Microgravity.

Four seconds.

She needed oxygen.

Her eyes were closing.

The angel descended upon her.

No.

The intake.

Olive resisted the angel. She fought off the halo.

Only, it wasn't a celestial body.

It was Ben! Offering her his breathing tube.

Delirious, she wouldn't take it. So, he leaned in and kissed her.

Their lips smushed together.
