Chapter Eighteen: Bunker

Jaden stared out at the barren landscape as they drove north out of Las Vegas. He was thrilled to learn that his mother was still alive. Yet, at the same time, it brought his pain into sharper focus. He couldn’t understand why she’d never told him and Malia the truth. She said she’d wanted to protect them, but he thought that sounded like a lame excuse.

He thought back on his life, to his friends back home, and felt utterly disconnected from everything. Everyone he knew was normal. What was he? As a product of genetic engineering, was he still human? Or Atlantian? He didn’t even know what that meant—were the Atlantians human or a totally different species? And what would his friends think of him if they found out the truth—if he ever saw them again?

Jaden wanted to see his mom again. He wanted to hug her, but at the same time, he wanted to scream at her. How could she do this? How could she pretend for his entire life that she was his birth mother and never tell him what he was?

“Jaden, I’m talking to you,” said Sydney.

“Oh, sorry—what?”

“You’re supposed to be navigating! Which way do I go here—we’re coming up on a big intersection.”

Jaden looked at the map. “Go left. In a little bit, you’re gonna go left again on 375.”

“Thank you,” she said.

They came to the intersection, and Sydney turned left. A few minutes later, they turned onto Route 375.

“What’s wrong?” asked Sydney. “You don’t look like a kid who just found out his mom’s still alive.”

Jaden grunted.

“He’s angry because she never told us any of the stuff we found out from Brian,” Malia told her.

Jaden turned to look at her. “Are you reading my mind?”

“I don’t have to,” she said. “I’m feeling the same thing.”

A few miles later, they drove by something quite unusual. There was a long, steel building to the right of the road. In front of it stood a giant, metal man.

“What the hell is that?” asked Jaden.

“The sign says ‘Alien Research Center,’” noted Malia.

“And look at this,” said Sydney, pointing to a road sign.

“‘Welcome to the Extraterrestrial Highway,’” Jaden read. “Are you kidding me?”

“Where exactly are we going,” Malia asked apprehensively.

“I don’t know,” said Jaden, looking at the map again. “The coordinates look like they’re in the middle of the desert. I don’t see any buildings or anything on the satellite view.”

“This reminds me of a movie,” said Sydney. “Maybe we’re driving into the middle of the desert to be abducted by beings from another world.”

Jaden snorted.

Almost an hour later, they passed a small settlement that consisted of only a handful of buildings.

“We’re almost there,” said Jaden.

They rolled past miles of desolate landscape. Fifteen minutes later, he said, “This is it—turn right!”

Sydney pulled over. “Turn right where?”

“Uh… here,” said Jaden, pointing out the window.

“Let me see that,” she said, taking the phone from him. “Huh… you’re right.”

But there was no road. There was a faint trail through the stunted shrubs, but no more.
