Bees

Of the various species of bee that appear in early spring, many of them are solitary bees that have emerged from their burrows in the ground. They do not sting and are important pollinators for a wide range of flowers and trees. Examples include the early mining bee, the ashy mining bee and the hairy-footed flower bee.

The queens of the bumblebee species (such as tree bumblebees, red-tailed bumblebees and white-tailed bumblebees) are the only members of their colonies to survive winter. They wake up in spring to search for nectar and pollen from early flowers such as dandelions, blackthorn blossom and white dead-nettles (see the photos on pages 13 and 66). They then begin the important work of setting up a new hive.
