CHAPTER SIX

The raft was heavier than it looked. They took a corner each and dragged it unsteadily down to the river’s edge. As they pushed it into the water, the coconuts bobbed out to the side and the logs gently rolled over the surface.

“I’ll keep it steady while you guys climb on,” Cassandra instructed, eager to get going.

One by one, they clambered on board, including Thunder, who seemed satisfied their journey downstream wouldn’t involve him getting wet.

Before Cassandra stepped on, she handed Katy a long stick for steering. Then, when they were all sitting down, Katy used the stick to push the raft away from the side. “Keep your eyes peeled for Nadira!” she said, green eyes sparkling with anticipation.

The journey was exactly what they needed after many tiring hours on foot. The raft bobbed along, caught in a gentle current, while the sun beat down, drying their clothes. Thunder curled up on Luca’s lap and was soon fast asleep.

“It’s like paradise,” said Cassandra, lying back and watching a bird with a huge bill swoop down to the water. It soared back up again, a fish dangling from its beak.

They passed a small herd of elephants drinking and spraying water on the bank, a family of monkeys pointing at their raft and laughing as they played cheekily in the trees. At one point, they spotted an old crocodile basking on some rocks. Cassandra gasped.
