These kinds of interactions occur daily all over the world. Steve and Paul have tossed the “hot potato” back and forth, but at no time did they acknowledge that they’re on the same team. The conversation focused on differences of opinion and ended with an unemphatic, misguided solution. Neither person asked any questions. No one made a one-across or one-down move. Each of them presented his interests but failed to explore connections and mutually beneficial outcomes. Before reading on, consider where Steve or Paul might have altered the course of this conversation with a question.
Since Steve reports to Paul, it’s to his advantage to connect rather than spar over Matt’s future. Paul also has a lot to gain from finding a reasonable solution. If Paul took the lead in redirecting the conversation onto a more productive course, it might go more like this:
STEVE: Matt is upsetting all his producers in France, Germany, and Japan. He’s clueless when it comes to working with people in other cultures. ()
PAUL: He has a good head on his shoulders. Just give him time and he’ll adapt. ()
STEVE: I can’t afford that kind of time, Paul. Three months can ruin a lot of relationships. ()
PAUL: What are our options here? ()
STEVE: Transferring him out is the best one. ()
PAUL: Probably so from the vantage point of a quick fix, but not in terms of developing him. I think he has a contribution to make. () Got any other ideas?()
STEVE: The problem right now is to get him away from the phone. () What if we send him to Europe, have him tag along with one of the guys he actually gets along with? () We could have him undergo intense cultural training before he leaves. That way, we’d put some time between him and the people he’s offended—it would give me time to mend some fences. ()
PAUL: It’s worth thinking about. ()
