The Doorways program matches students with mentors who regularly visit the student at school, providing a role model and advisor who can expose the student to ideas and information. We have no idea how much we know about things that our students need to know. It is remarkably helpful to have a caring adult with whom the student can discuss problems and make plans for their future.

In order to increase the number of mentors for our students, the city launched three efforts: providing training to mentors; recruiting mentors from businesses and the general public; and providing mentoring incentives to city employees. We allowed city employees one hour per week paid time to mentor a child in the public schools. We averaged between 150 to 200 city employees as mentors each year of the program. We also recruited and trained over 1,200 mentors for our public schools. Each mentor was helping to direct a child toward success!
