I want to go home.
Living on land in this human form has changed me far more than I expected. And Iâm not happy about it.
Today I lied. I continued the ruse that Iâm happily engaged to the prince, though in reality I despise him.
I stole from this kingdomâa small object, to be sure, but Iâm no idiot. I know the little garnish fork must be worth far more than the Sea Witch is willing to say.
Yes, I lied by my actions, and I stole a treasureâand I also used my hand on the princeâs cock in the Vault of Queens. I did it so he would continue to trust me, to like meâso he wouldnât insist on rutting with me on the floor of the vault. Knowing Kerrin as I do now, I understood that spraying his cum on the jewels of his ancestors would give him a sick satisfaction. He is a foul, selfish man, utterly blinded by his own perceived greatness.
Itâs all I can do to stroll calmly through the festival at his side, dressed in my sumptuous gown of heavy emerald fabric, wearing the ponderous, garish jewelry he chose for me. He wouldnât even let me select my own engagement jewels.
The festival is an assembly of hastily constructed, bright-colored tents, lined up in a double row along the boardwalk that follows the curve of the coast. Thereâs a sea wall bordering the area, and a blessed breeze rushing off the ocean, slithering between the booths and tents. The night wind cools and dries the sweat on my forehead.
Prince Kerrin and I are watching a troupe of six fire jugglers. Their talent fascinates and frightens me, though if I felt less sticky and uncomfortable I might enjoy the show more. As it is, the whirling heat of the torches theyâre using only heightens the sense that Iâm slowly boiling inside my gown. The prince chose my dress, of courseâand instead of the usual low neckline or plunging back, this garment covers me entirely from ankles to wrists to chin. âNow no one else can enjoy what is mine,â he said contentedly, when he first saw me wearing it.
I managed to persuade my maids to leave my hair untouched, in the same coiffure as this morning. The tiny garnish fork is still deep inside the braids; one of its tines is poking my scalp.
Somehow I have to get away from Kerrin and find the Sea Witch. But there are so many guards all around usâso many villagers and vendors.
Reluctantly I shift my thoughts, formulating a wish for the Witchâs attention, calling his gaze. But nothing happens. And that means he must be very close byâtoo close for our remote connection to work. My insides ripple with excitement as I scan the crowd more carefully. Where is he? Can he see me right now?
A scream splits the night, and several horrified shouts erupt as one of the fire jugglers loses control of his torches. Thereâs a bright flash, an explosion of sparks carried high by a sudden gust of wind.
