And those are just real-life nightmares. When it comes to horror movies, families are always making unreasonable demands of each other. They can be really overbearing — and not in that funny, man, I've been there! way that we see so often in romantic comedies. It's more of a do-this-for-me-or-I'll-rip-your-bowels-out-while-you're-still-alive way. Family — you can't live with ‘em, can't drive a stake through their undead hearts!

There comes a time in every young girl's life when she has to question just how far she is willing to go to gain her family's approval. Are you willing to change your college major because your dad thinks you have a better chance at a career as an accountant than an art teacher? Is sacrificing your beliefs by wearing your mom's prized fur really worth it? And the biggest challenge of all — are you willing to stab your sister who has transformed into a werewolf intent on killing anyone who gets in her way?

In 2000's Ginger Snaps, we meet two sisters, Ginger and Brigitte, whose only true friends in life are each other. In a run of the mill, oops, I got the tainted blood of a mutilated dog on my hands incident, Ginger begins a transformation into a werewolf and despite the fact that she becomes a total bitch (ha!), Brigitte remains committed to finding a cure for her rapidly changing sister. Dumb. Stupid. Baaaaaaad move, Brigitte.

And then there's the queen of all martyrs, Wendy Torrance of The Shining. Despite the fact that she knows her husband to be a violent drunk, she still decides to support him in his decision to serve as caretaker of an isolated hotel far from anyone who could help them should they run out of toilet paper or begin hallucinating and try to kill each other. We saw how her decision played out. Now that's devotion.

It's hard to resist family when they need your help. But in horror movies, there is a precedent of things going particularly badly when it comes to the fam. Far be it for you to ignore it.
