The female athlete triad

The Female Athlete Triad refers to the relationship between energy availability, menstrual function and bone health. The triad is a continuum ranging from the healthy athlete with good energy availability, a regular menstrual cycle and healthy bones to the opposite end characterised by low energy availability, amenorrhea and osteoporosis. Female judoka in any weight division except for over 78 kg are at risk of the negative health effects of the Female Athlete Triad. Most female judoka from ages as young as 12 years will regularly restrict their energy intake to make weight for competitions (Artioli et al., 2010). Furthermore, the high training load with or without restricted food intake will often lead to reduced energy availability and increased risk of the negative effects of the Female Athlete Triad on reproductive and skeletal health. The American College of Sports Medicine position statement on The Female Athlete Triad recommends that athletes should be assessed in annual health screening (Nattiv et al., 2007). Moreover, if an athlete presents with one symptom of the triad they should be assessed for all aspects. Whenever a female judoka becomes aware of changes in her menstrual function it is important to contact a medical doctor for advice and treatment to avoid long-term negative health effects. Furthermore, coaches, athletes and parents of younger athletes should be educated on prevention and early intervention for the Female Athlete Triad.
