Around ten her father went to bed, leaving Janet the company of the television and a pillow from the closet. She pulled the multicolored afghan from the back of the couch and wrapped it around her shoulders, going to the darkened window. Her reflection starring back, pale and indistinct, a distant woman with no name and no past.

She stood at the window, drawn to it, knowing if she stepped away, she would miss something, a flicker of movement, a shadow darting from one tree to the next.

She stood, breathing, watching.
