With Meg’s help, Anna navigated back to town.

She was overjoyed to see it again, especially since they were so close. They caught flashes of movement from the alleys and the trees, but they were going too fast for the muties to catch them. She grinned as she passed the airport, and her anticipation skyrocketed.

She was so close!

“Where are they waiting?” Meg asked.

“Outside of town at a gas station,” Anna said, pushing the pedal down a little more.

It took every ounce of her self-control not to speed dangerously through the sprawling town. Everywhere she looked, she saw the trail of damage left by the passing horde.

“And you think they’ll still be there?” Meg sounded skeptical.

“Of course! They wouldn’t just leave me behind,” Anna scoffed.

In the distance, she saw an intersection and an obstruction in the road. She slowed the car, wanting to make sure she didn’t wreck. As they closed the distance, what she saw made her slam on the brakes.

Shit.

Her truck lay in the road, crashed. The remains of a body, badly mutilated, cluttered the pavement. Naomi hadn’t made it.

“That was your truck, wasn’t it?” Meg asked, sounding old and sad.

“Yes.”

Her lip quivered, but she didn’t cry. “The government got another McCoy. Guess that makes me the last of my people.” Meggie looked older and the quaver in her voice showed just how much she was affected. Anna didn’t think the woman would appreciate a hug or some vague sentiment.

“We’ll be your people now. You’ll fit right in, trust me.”

“We’ve got to find them first.”

Anna backed up and made a detour through the side streets. There was no reason that Meg should have to see the body of her granddaughter. It only took a few moments, and they were back on their way. Anna’s enthusiasm was only partially dimmed.

Nothing could make her unhappy, not when she was so close.

She followed the highway out of town, recognizing the familiar businesses and landmarks. It was cloudy and cold again, typical of November…or maybe it was already December. The rain started and she turned on the windshield wipers.

She saw the blur of the gas station sign in the distance and smiled. “Almost there!”

Meg smiled at her, but it was a ragged smile. Thin.

Anna turned back and as they got closer her smile dropped away. A frown took its place. The lot was empty. They were gone.

They had left.

They had left her behind. She couldn’t fathom it. They wouldn’t have. Never. Even if the herd had come through and run them off, they would have found a way back. Jared would have planted his butt in this parking lot and waited forever for her, if necessary.

So…why hadn’t he?

“Dear…” Meg began. “I don’t know how to tell you this—” She stopped. She fidgeted with her sleeves and picked at the fur. “They probably think that you’re dead.”

Anna felt everything inside her crash to a halt. Every thought, every feeling…it all just stopped for a moment as she considered that. If they thought she was dead, then they were gone.
