It wasn’t a truck, but it damned sure felt like one.

She had caught the quick flash of movement, felt the powerful backward thrust of his elbow. Then, the agonizing sharp ache in her chest and her breath left her in a gasp. She went down like a rock, not even feeling the sharp gravel as it bit into the side of her face.

She couldn’t breathe.

Her lungs stuck, immobilized in violent spasm. She was going to suffocate. She had made it through a fucking cannibal apocalypse only to be taken out by a measly elbow to the chest.

Okay, maybe not measly, but still…killed by an elbow, for God’s sake.

She pounded on the ground, panicked and ill. After forever had passed, she felt arms lifting her torso so that she was kneeling on the ground. Someone was either trying to help her or hurt her, and she had absolutely no defense.

“Breathe in,” a deep voice growled in her ear.

She obeyed, finally able to take in a lifesaving breath with a whooping pant. The arms still held her, torso tilted slightly back, and she realized it was easier to breathe this way. She tried to relax in the unfamiliar embrace, until she remembered the danger around them.

She shoved herself out of the arms and stood, dizzily. She leaned her hands on her knees for a moment, breathing and scanning the space.

The ankle biter lay nearby with a crushed head.

“It was going to get your leg,” she wheezed, finally able to stand up without feeling like she was going to tip over.

“I’m sorry I hit you. It’s not good to come up behind someone like me when they’re fighting,” he said.

He almost sounded as if it were her fault.

“Next time I’ll hang back and let you get hamstringed.” She picked up her knife. Then walked over to her bag and clutched her chest as she swung it back on her back. Next came the rifle. Then, she grabbed the ammo can. “You suck at thank yous, by the way,” she said.

She walked slowly toward her car, trying to work out the small spasm that seemed to still be gripping her diaphragm. She looked all around, even making sure nothing was crawling out from under the vehicle. She unlocked the door and went to open it but was stopped by his next statement.

“You need to come with us.”

He had stopped at the trunk of her car, his team keeping watch not far behind.

“Why?” she asked.

“Do you have other plans?” he asked in return.

“Do you?” she retorted.

“What if I do?” he said.

“How do I know this isn’t some kind of trick?”

“Stop answering my questions with questions,” he huffed. “Come with us. We’re going to find the rest of our unit. They left to go back to the armory. They were gearing up to head up to Thompsonville.”

“What’s at Thompsonville?” she asked.

The overflow lot was quiet, and the main gate still seemed to be clear, but they couldn’t stand out here all night talking. She pulled her pistols and ammo from their hiding places and began strapping them all on.
