'The skipper will soon have that out,' he said.

Suddenly the plane lost altitude as if it was dropping out of the sky and each of the former POWs froze in terror. Within seconds the plane levelled and the fire in the wing was out. More than one in the company made use of the paper bags that had been provided on boarding.

Arthur arrived in Brussels on 8 May 1945, VE Day. Making his way through the city, thousands of people were celebrating in the street. By pure chance, he bumped into Fred Robinson, an old school friend, and they made the most of the joyous occasion. After six years of fear, never knowing what tomorrow would bring or indeed if there would be a tomorrow, it was wonderful to be among so many people of so many nationalities celebrating the first day of the future.
