CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Casual Romance Department, Third Floor, FGA Tower, New York City, New York

When Paris and Faraday entered the department space, it was quieter than usual. There was no loud workout music or Isha chanting yoga mantras, or Holly cheering to do fifty more sit-ups.

Doris was muttering to herself in the corner as she rocked in a new to the space rocking chair, but not new in age. The piece of furniture was quite weathered with its peeling paint and creaky wood. In one hand, the older fairy twirled her wand, making the paper from the tele-eventor unwind from the machine and stretch along the table in front of her. Doris leaned forward at times before writing on a pad of paper in her lap and continuing her muttering.

“Oh, right, a C248 means a digital affair,” the fairy mumbled, scratching out something on the piece of paper. She seemed quite coordinated, twirling the wand and writing at the same time—using both hands at once.

“Doris, where are Holly and Isha?” Paris looked around the open space. “Do you know what’s going on here?”

The old lady waved absentmindedly at the far side of the department. “They’re over in the Wellness Area playing with that fandangoed technology you said to stay away from. I agree. I told them it was a waste of their energy, but no one listens to Doris.”

Paris glanced down at Faraday, who was clutching the book she’d given him, but thankfully he’d stopped reading it. “They don’t listen to me either.”

“She’s working,” Faraday offered, indicating Doris who indeed appeared to be productive.

“I see that. In an ironic turn of events, the one voted least likely to be helpful seems to be and the ones supposed to be working are…well, still not doing that.”

“In their defense, they don’t have any cases,” Faraday stated.

“I’ve been able to decode over sixty cases and should have another dozen done before tea time,” Doris interjected, not taking her eyes off her work.

“Great, sounds like I’ll have some files to review.” Paris let out a grateful sigh. “Wonderful work, Doris.”

“Just doing my job, dear,” the fairy sang, rocking back and forth.

Paris started for the Wellness Area at the back and paused. “Oh, and Doris. Where did the rocking chair come from?”

“It’s mine,” she replied. “I had it sent down here from the mailroom. I do my best work when I’m in motion.”

“The old woman does her best work when she’s moving,” Faraday mused quietly enough for Doris not to hear.

Paris nodded. “Irony keeps following me around.”
