“Are you out of your mind, Connor?” Mia asks, holding the small item out in front of her.

“I think we both know I’m not,” I say.

She mumbles something about “I don’t, but perhaps we should get a professional opinion.”

I ignore her.

Her life is worth more to me than irritating my bride the night before our wedding. I have the rest of my life to make up for it. The only way that happens is if she lives through this fucking charade.

I know how important getting married at the Mancini mansion is to her and that there would be dangerous individuals present. So, while I own a private security company, with thousands of highly skilled former military, and have access to weapons and equipment required to keep the woman I love safe, I went a little further for our special day.

I had a custom-made bulletproof bodice made.

“I want you to wear it,” I reply. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about it first, but I knew you’d say no. It’s just a precaution but one I’m putting my foot down on.”

“Gabrielle isn’t going to kill me, babe.”

I raise my brows slowly and Mia tosses the vest, or rather the bodice, onto the bed and frowns.

I’m prepared for this and intend to win this battle.

“Mia, you’re the Mancini princess. Until you sign that wedding certificate, you remain an asset to the mafia.” I cross my arms. “I swear to God I’m five seconds from dragging your sexy ass to city hall.”

She sighs, then walks to me, placing her palms on my chest. Immediately, like she’s using witchcraft; her touch calms me.

A notch—not completely.

“Baby, there are ten million soldiers on this property protecting me. Dad’s and yours,” she says, smiling.

I shake my head.

I know she’s lived this life since she was born, but something is off. Gabrielle’s question, along with the balcony collapsing, is enough to send a warning chill through me.

If it wasn’t our wedding, I would pack up and leave.

“You might trust your father, but I don’t. I certainly don’t trust Gabrielle. You are the love of my life, Mia. I am not risking it.” I cup the back of her neck. “So, you either wear it, or I’ll get the helicopter in the air right now.”

Her forehead lands on my chest.

“It won’t fit,” she moans into my shirt.

“It will fit.”

What Mia doesn’t know is her designer and my people worked together.

It fits.

“My boobs will look enormous,” she tries next, and I grin.

“Even better.”

“I hate you,” she groans.

“No, you don’t. You love me.” I drop my lips onto hers.

“I do love you.” Mia sighs, and my grin turns into a smirk. “In a few hours, you’ll be Mrs. Barrett. Mine forever.”

“Then will you stop bossing me around?” Mia asks.
