(What Might Have Been)

Four hours later, a Gulfstream IV, Grey Ghost, touched down at Burbank Airport and taxied to the ramp, where Anya and Gwynn stood enjoying the afternoon sun.

Gwynn watched the plane roll to a stop. “That belongs to Chase?”

The answer came in the form of a stroll up the boarding stairs.

As they stepped aboard, a man emerged from the cockpit, towering over both women, and extended a hand. “You must be Special Agent Davis. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Chase Fulton.”

Gwynn took his hand, grinned, and shot Anya a look.

The Russian said, “I told you he is beautiful.”

With the handshake complete, she said, “I’m just Gwynn. I’m pretty sure”—she nodded toward Anya—“she got me fired.”

Chase glanced at the woman he’d once adored. “She does that. Make yourself at home. We’ll take on a little fuel and have you in St. Marys before you know it.”

“It’s really nice to finally meet you, Chase.”

“The pleasure’s all mine,” he said as he bounded down the stairs.

The pair settled into plush leather seats, and Gwynn leaned toward her partner. “Oh my God, girl. He’s gorgeous, and he owns a Gulfstream.”

Anya said, “Ah, he is all right, and he owns many airplanes. This is biggest one.”

“Where’s St. Marys?” Gwynn asked.

“Is in Georgia. American Georgia. This is where we are first going. We must have equipment for mission, and this is where equipment is stored.”

Gwynn lowered her voice. “Is Penny going to be there?”

“Probably. Why do you ask?”

Gwynn huffed. “I’ve got to see the woman he picked over you.”

Anya cast her eyes to the floor. “She is very beautiful and also very kind. You will like her.”

The three-and-a-half-hour flight ended with the wheels chirping onto the concrete of the private airfield adjacent to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in St. Marys, Georgia. A few minutes after taxiing to a stop, Chase emerged from the cockpit again, but this time, he was followed by an older, smaller man.

Anya leapt to her feet. “Hello to you, Disco. This is friend Gwynn.”

Disco said, “It’s nice to see you, Anya, and it’s very nice to meet you, Ms. Gwynn.”

She rose. “It’s just Gwynn. Did she say your name was Disco?”

“That’s not what my mother named me, but in this crowd, everybody’s got a nickname.”

Gwynn glanced at Anya. “What’s yours?”

“I do not have nickname. Everyone is afraid of me, so I get only respect.”

Chase said, “Oh, we call you a lot of things, but rarely to your face. And you’re right. We’re all a little scared of you.”

They descended the stairs, and introductions continued until Chase pulled from the hangar in an ancient brown VW Microbus.

Anya beamed. “This was my father’s car!”

The five-minute drive to Bonaventure Plantation, where Chase and his team lived, trained, worked, and played, was barely long enough for Anya to tell the story of meeting her father, Dr. Robert Richter, so many years before.

Chase motioned for them to follow him up the steps and into the house. “I imagine you two would like to use the restroom and grab something to drink before we start packing.
