Chapter 35

The meeting continued once I had announced my plans. Stewards and secretaries were brought in, as well as counselors and advisors. Once the tables were packed full of papers, people and pipes of longleaf, I began to address the group.

“If we are going to survive this conflict,” I started, standing at the table once more. “Then we must have resources. Gold makes the world go round. And while I’ve spent my career chasing after vast wealth, I’ve put most of it inside of business, stores and investments. House Landon generates a whopping 5 gold per week. I have never worried about us going hungry and so I saw no reason to step up our cash production. Now, we’re at a point where we must survive at all costs. And bread will not repel him. And so…I must leverage everything I have to build up a war chest.”

Sannah frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I mean I’m going to sell everything I have,” I calmly replied. “You all have various contacts, resources and lines of credit. You are to use everything in your power to get us every last gold coin you can. Beg, borrow, promise, offer minor titles, whatever must be done. We have a lot of land and a lot of equity that can be leveraged. I expect everyone here to be able to bring me at least a million.”

At least a million…hardly. I needed much more. But this would probably be the most the group would be able to get, Reinley notwithstanding.

“What about your stores?” Grant asked.

I took a deep breath. “I’m doing the one thing I swore to myself I’d never do. I’m going to sell everything on clearance. A fire sale. The biggest the world has ever seen.”

Those words seemed to mean business to the rest of the group. They all stared at me in surprise. It’s funny how Kinging myself brought no real confusion yet my desire to turn liquid assets into solid gold was baffling to them.

“Adventure Awaits was just a vehicle,” I said. “A means to an end. I have accomplished everything I set out to do as a merchant, and even more. Nothing will stop me from running my business interests from the throne – but I must have a throne first.”

“St. Agathane has a saying,” Reinley offered. “The man who plants a seed is smart. But the man who knows when to reap the plant is smarter still.”

“Well it’s time for one hell of a harvest,” I agreed. “Sannah and Grant, I want you both working on moving every last valuable out of the mountain. Deeptorch will serve as your ground forces. Kick any adventurer out or recruit them for pay.”

“Understood,” Grant said. “And what of our city?”

“Runeria will be left as it is,” I said. “A testament of what was once. And perhaps a fortress for future operations. Who knows? But take the people out and bring them here.”

“And the orcs?” Grant asked.

“Send word to their matrons that any Orc who comes to Runeria will be sheltered,” I said.
