An Avro York of 242 Squadron during the Berlin Airlift. Built utilizing the same wings, undercarriage and engines as the Lancaster bomber, the York could carry a payload of 20,000lb or 24 passengers. (RAFM)

In mid-July, it was calculated that the daily needs of food and coal in Berlin amounted to 3,234 tons per day, but at that stage the airlift could provide only 1,950 tons, leaving a daily shortfall of over 1,000 tons. Civil air contractors were also called in and the operation was consolidated with the larger aircraft, such as the Avro York and USAF Douglas C-54 Skymaster, operating from Wunsdorf into Gatow, and the smaller Dakotas from Fassberg into Tempelhof, in the US Sector of Berlin. The Dakotas soon moved again to Lübeck to make space at Fassberg for more USAF Skymasters.
