Brief history

Granted a town charter in 1220, Dordrecht was the most important and powerful town in the Province of Holland until well into the sixteenth century. One of the first cities to declare against the Habsburgs (in 1572), it was the obvious site for the first meeting of the Free Assembly of the United Provinces, and for a series of doctrinal conferences that tried to solve a whole range of theological differences among the various Protestant sects. The Protestants may have hated the Catholics, but they inherited the medieval church’s enthusiasm for theological debate: in 1618, at the Synod of Dordt, the Remonstrants argued with the Calvinists over the definition of predestination – pretty weighty stuff compared with the Synod of 1574, when one of the main rulings demanded the dismantling of church organs. From the 1690s, Dordrecht lost ground to its great rivals to the north, slipping into comparative insignificance, though it did manage to hold onto enough trade and industry to keep its economy afloat – as is the case today, helped by its popularity as a minor tourist destination.
