Damside

Don’t Pass Me By Damside, Pardi; map. Unbeatable location, with flower-framed gardens running down to the lake’s final finger, and wooded slopes just opposite. Better for breakfast or a simple lunch (from Rs300) of the standard curry, pasta and burger kind, as insects can be troublesome at night. Daily 7am–9.30pm.

Nightlife

Pokhara’s nightlife scene is second only to Thamel’s, but it’s distinctly more laidback and closing times are fairly strictly observed – not much happens after 11pm. Almost all bars feature happy hours – which usually means most of the afternoon up to 5–7pm. The music scene consists of Nepali rock bands playing covers earlier in the evening, and sometimes DJs playing the usual dancefloor-filling Western tunes later on, but you can occasionally find Bollywood nights, jazz bands or more interesting fusion groups – you’ll have to follow your ears. The Hungry Eye, Hotel Barahi, Boomerang and a few other tourist restaurants put on free folk music and dance performances by local troupes during dinner.

Busy Bee Lakeside Marg; map. Spacious, partially open-air bar that’s as lively as the name suggests, with a group rocking every night (8–11pm), pool and table football, a long cocktail list (happy hour 3–7pm) and a buzzing garden area down by the lake complete with a water-feature and a little bridge. Popular chiefly with young Westerners. Daily noon–1am.

Irish Pub Lakeside Marg; map. Hidden down an alleyway with walls covered in colourful graffiti art, the Irish Pub has a big-screen TV for sporting fixtures and frequent live music. Daily noon–midnight.

Maya Pub Lakeside Marg; map. A popular bar-restaurant with a legendary Australian manager. Good for after-house lounging with beer (from Rs300), cocktails and music. Serves good, moderately priced pastas, sizzlers and vegetarian dishes, too. Daily 9am–11pm or later.

Movie Garden Khahare 990 102 2828; map. This “cinema” is literally just a big screen on a hillside in somebody’s garden. Films are mostly fairly old Hollywood efforts but with popcorn, beer and an intimate atmosphere it makes for a great night out. There’s also an impressive lake-view backdrop. Films most nights from 7pm.

Rolling Stones Lakeside Marg; map. Down a side street and right on the lakeshore, entry to this rock venue is via doors shaped like Mick Jagger’s famously pouting lips. There’s a big stage, good sound system and local and national bands playing nightly. Daily 7.30–11pm.

Sukra Bar Near Camping Chowk, Lakeside Marg 061 462 633; map. This lakeside bar has frequent live acts focusing on modern Nepali folk music. They claim to never close, though in reality are most reliable during the hours stated. Daily 6.30am–11.30pm.
