Museo Bottega della Tarsialignea
Via San Nicola 28 • Daily 10am–6.30pm • €8
Appropriately housed in an ancient mansion in the artisanal quarter of the old town, the Museo Bottega della Tarsialignea is a shrine to the traditional Sorrentine craft of intarsio – inlaid woodwork basically, using different types of wood to decorate furniture and other items with patterns or pictures.
Intarsio work has been around since the 1500s, and is a real craft, although inevitably Sorrento is packed with shops selling not particularly distinguished examples. But don’t let the tourist tat put you off: the ground floor of the museum has stylish examples of contemporary local intarsio for sale (at a price), while upstairs are works by Sorrento’s late nineteenth-century intarsio greats – Luigi Gargiulo, Michele Grandville and Giuseppe Gargiulo – beautiful if sometimes overwrought.
