Museo del Acero Horno-3

Parque Fundidora • Tues–Thurs 10am–6pm, Fri–Sun 11am–7pm • M$100; Paseo Cima Tues–Thurs 6–10pm, Fri–Sun 7–10pm • M$50 • 81 8126 1100, horno3.org

The centrepiece of the Parque Fundidora is the Museo del Acero Horno-3, a remarkable museum created out of the guts of a jagged steel mill. Inside are galleries tracing the history of the steel industry in Monterrey (with English labels), as well as the steel-manufacturing process itself – the highlight is the Show del Torne, which reproduces the dazzling (and fiery) spectacle of steel-making. You can also scale the 40m viewing platform via special iron elevators (“Paseo por la Cima”), and eat at El Lingote (Tues–Sat 1pm–midnight, Sun 1–11pm; 81 8126 1100, ellingoterestaurante.com).

El Obispado

Fray Rafael José Verger, off Padre Mier • Take the R4 bus, alighting where it turns off Padre Mier, then continue to the top of the steps at the end of Padre Mier and turn left; it’s a 10min walk in all. Return to the centre using any bus heading east on Hidalgo

The elegant and beautifully renovated Obispado, the old bishop’s palace, tops the hill to the west of downtown Monterrey like a golden temple. Its commanding position – affording magnificent views when haze and smog allow – has made it an essential target for Monterrey’s many invaders. Completed in 1787, it has served as a barracks, a military hospital and a fortress: among its more dramatic exploits, the Obispado managed to hold out for two days after the rest of the city had fallen to US general Zachary Taylor in 1846.

Museo Regional de Nuevo León

Fray Rafael José Verger s/n • Tues–Sun 9am–6pm • M$60 (free Sun) • 81 8123 0644

After so much history elsewhere in the city, you might baulk at the Museo Regional de Nuevo León inside the Obispado – essentially another journey through the past of Nuevo León, with an emphasis on religious and secular art, arms from the War of Independence, revolutionary pamphlets and old carriages – but the collection has an oddly appealing charm and is evocatively set in the original stone chambers with timber ceilings. Labels are in Spanish only.

Mirador Asta Bandera

Cerro del Obispado • Daily 8.30am–10.30pm • Free • 81 8347 1533

A short, steep walk up the road behind the Obispado takes you to the top of the Cerro del Obispado and the Mirador Asta Bandera, a sensational viewpoint (775m) topped with a giant, 100m tall Mexican flag. Raised in 2005, the flag is the second largest in Mexico (the biggest flies in Piedras Negras on the US border, a whopping 120m tall), part of the “banderas monumentales” programme initiated by President Zedillo in 1999.

Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma

Alfonso Reyes Nte 2202 • Tours Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 9am–2pm; tours are usually in Spanish, and you need to make a reservation if you require an English-speaking guide – reservations are recommended in any case • Free • 1hr–1hr 30min • 81 8328 5355, heinekenmexico.com • Jardín Cerveza Daily 10am–6pm
