Café del Sol Turn right at the beach, 250m to the west 5050 9173, cafe-del-sol.com; map. Boasts a lovely beach-facing frontage, with sunbeds facing the ocean. It’s a well-run place with a wide choice of accommodation divided between inland and beachside blocks (some units are upwards of US$86). There’s a restaurant, hot tub and three pools. US$48

Dos Mundos 1.5km east of the centre 7823 0820, hotelsdosmundos.com/pacific; map. Luxurious option, with fourteen stunning, minimalist, palapa-roofed, detached a/c bungalows, each with a huge terrace and swanky bathroom, set in beachfront gardens. There’s a fine pool overlooking the rollers, a kids’ pool and a good, if pricey, restaurant. Rates include breakfast. US$108

Hotel El Delfín On the right at the beachfront 5702 6701, hotel-el-delfin.com; map. This rambling place is owned by an enthusiastic, welcoming British-Guatemalan couple. All rooms have fans and mosquito nets, and a few have a/c (US$38); the best bets are those that face the central patio. You’ll find an international vibe, pool, bar, cheap food, semi-reliable wi-fi, and complimentary coffee in the mornings, plus iced water throughout the day. Your fourth night is free. Dorm US$11, doubles US$22

Hotel Playa Saltamonte Just off the beach 5456 9854, [email protected]; map. The Swiss-German owners of this hotel offer four clean, stylish rooms (US$50 with a/c); rates include breakfast. There are two (small) pools and a restaurant, plus Bar Bambas on the upper level (see below). US$39

Johnny’s Place Turn left at the beach and walk for 150m 5812 0409, johnnysplacehotel.com map. A backpacking favourite, with an enticing beachside location and nice chill-out zone (a palapa with hammocks). It offers a well-designed new beachside block (with simple rooms and beach-facing suites), bungalows (some ancient, some renovated), plus a/c rooms and a family-sized apartment. There’s a main pool, and several bungalows have their own small pools as well. The party vibe has been turned down a notch recently but the bar still rocks on weekends (and serves good food). Dorms US$17, doubles US$34

Pez de Oro Turn left at the beach and walk for 350m 5232 9534, pezdeoro.com; map. An attractive place to stay, with lovely, spotless, thatched cottages, all with mosquito nets, wooden furniture, and bedcovers made from Guatemalan textiles (nos. 1 and 13 have sea views). There are two palm-shaded pool areas and the beach-facing restaurant serves fine Italian and international food. US$61
