“Great work today, everyone! If you dripped sweat on the floor today, please grab a towel to clean up your puddles before you go! You can leave the used towels in the corner over there.” Caro wiped her hands on her pants and jogged to the classroom door to distribute high fives and affirmations as the students left for the day. She’d picked up the habit from a former student teacher. It had seemed entirely cringey at the time, and more appropriate in a kindergarten classroom than high school, but she’d changed her tune the first time she saw it in action. Apparently, teenagers liked cheesy things.

“Excellent work today!” With all the high fives and compliments complete, Caro threw the gross sweat towels in the hamper and cleaned the studio. Technically, she was supposed to stay in the hallway during the passing period. But she had too much shit to do to spend any time standing still.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: You absolute bitch. First you take advantage of your grandma, and now your own father? You should be ashamed of yourself. Your bad actions will catch up with you.

DIFFERENT UNKNOWN NUMBER: Slut. Bitch. Succubus.

THIRD UNKNOWN NUMBER: YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF LINA

Well, fuck. Caro did not have time for this. She did not have the energy for this. She took screenshots and tossed her phone in the desk drawer. Suddenly, the dance studio felt too big, too echoey, and too much. Caro had to get out of there.

“Olivia.” She knocked on her friend’s office door. “What do you have going on?”

“Hey! I was about to start organizing the food pantry. We just got a big donation dropped off, and my student aide is out, so I need to put everything away myself.”

“Can I help you?”

“I mean… of course you can. If you want to? Is everything okay, though?”

“It’s my planning period.”

“Yeah…” Olivia knew as well as she did that she had a to-do list a mile long, and nowhere on that list was room for additional tasks that weren’t hers to begin with. Hell, Caro had skipped passing period duty, and here she was practically begging to stack cans of beans. Blessedly, Olivia didn’t press any further and accepted the help in the food pantry.

“Basketball season starts soon,” Olivia mused.

“Oh my gosh, I know. It’s crazy how the time flies. I haven’t seen a basketball game in so long. By the way, Jojo didn’t buy season tickets this year, but his teammate has a box we can use.”

“That’s kind of you to think of us, but I have a feeling that you are the one with the open invitation for the box.”

Caro thought back through her previous conversations with Che. “Huh. Maybe. I think they got the impression that we were dating. His teammates seemed surprised that we’re just roommates.”

“Interesting. I wonder what gave them that impression.”

“Shut up.”

“What? I didn’t say anything.” Olivia organized the bags of rice so they wouldn’t fall off the shelf.

“It’s not what you said. It’s how you said it.
