CHAPTER 10

I walk into Angelina’s courtyard, the one that folk are not permitted to see. I breathe in the sweet air and the sun covers my face as I look up. It’s midday and we will be eating lunch together.

“There you are,” Angelina says.

“You cleared the snow from out here?” I ask.

“The snow didn’t fall in here. We have an invisible roof that keeps the weather out. And the climate is controlled by my great-great-grandmother. She loves the spring, so it’s late spring all year round in here,” she says with a laugh. “Now sit down, Starlight.”

I do as she asks and Angelina stares at me. “Using your instinct, do you have any idea which of those suspects killed George?”

“You definitely think it was someone on the committee?” I ask.

“Yes.”

“Flynn said that it was natural causes.”

Angelina sits back and shakes her head. “The coroner said it was natural causes and that can mean one of two things. George was killed by a spell to induce a natural, yet premature, death. Or the coroner has been intercepted by the Denman Coven.”

“Why do you think he was killed?”

“Flynn came to me. While folk determine there’s no case to pursue, he thinks there is and will do so in his downtime. Flynn’s gift means that he can see injustice, he can sense it, he knows deep inside that George was killed. It is his desire to find justice that led him to his job. Sadly, he is often in conflict with it, when his senses are at odds with folk opinion.”

“And you?”

“I feel the Denman Coven in that room. I’ve no idea who it is – if they’re possessed or a member themselves. But I feel it around this place, it lingers. I will not rest until they’re found and we must stop them if we are to save the source and the witch population.”

“I’ve no idea how to do that,” I say.

“I’m not sure how you will achieve this either, but you need to speak to each and every one of them on a one-to-one basis and ask questions.”

“Will they always tell me the truth?”

“This we cannot be sure of – especially if the Denman Coven senses who you are. You will be in danger if they then target you with all their might. They overpowered your father. So take care, you must not be too direct. Do not raise suspicions.”

“Surely those voting against the planning are not under suspicion. I guess I’m only looking at Dominic, Bethany and maybe Shannon?”

Angelina sighs. “Remember what I said. Members of the Denman Coven hide in plain sight. Everyone is a potential killer. Trust no one.”

“Not at all?”

“Apart from me, Glenwood, Jumble…”

“...and Sextus?” I say.

“Of course.” Angelina says.

At the sound of his name, the cat appears. “What do you want?” he asks in a sulky fashion with a yawn.

Angelina laughs. “I forgot to tell you. Whenever you say his name, Sextus will find you.”

“Unless you go too far away,” Sextus says as he sits down. “Your voice will not travel over fifty miles.
