Chapter Five

“How is she?” Craig lunged into Kyle’s personal space close enough to make the omega cringe and take a step back.

Lorcan’s wolf snarled and sent him racing to put himself between his breeding mate and the gamma. “Back off! I’d hate to have to rip your head off just as you’re about to become a sire.” He bared his teeth to punctuate his threat.

Craig’s eyes went wide, and putting his palms up, he backed off a few steps with his neck tilted into an exposed position. “Sorry, Alpha. I’m worried about Mabel.”

“She’s fine.” Kyle’s small hand snaked around Lorcan’s waist and he tried to move him aside. Fat chance. Lorcan’s feet were planted firmly. So, his clever and determined mate simply stepped around him. “I came out to get more ice chips for her. It’s almost time for her to start pushing and she and the pups are doing great.”

When it looked like Kyle intended to get closer to Craig, Lorcan grabbed him by the shoulders and kept him close. With their pup starting to show on the boy’s slender frame, Lorcan had become particularly protective.

Craig paced away, fisting his hair with both hands in obvious frustration. “I should be with her.”

The anguish in his voice made Lorcan wince. They’d been hanging in the great room with most of their pack since Mabel’s water had broken. The oldest of their pack, a sigma named Andrea, served as their healer. She had ushered Mabel into her bedroom with the sigmas who’d already given birth in attendance. And, she’d included Kyle in that group because as she’d said, he needed to know what was in store for him. It was hard for Lorcan to hear his pack mate crying out in pain. How much harder was it for her bonded mate? All things considered, Craig had kept his shit together, as had the two sigma sires in their midst when it had been their time. But, as a gamma, Craig’s emotions could manifest in violence in an instant. No way a volatile male wolf could be allowed that close to his mate’s birth.

Lorcan turned Kyle toward the kitchen. “Go on and get the ice chips, baby. I’ll handle Craig.”

“Yes, Lorcan.”

He couldn’t help smiling. It had taken almost the full month that they’d been together, but his mate was finally using his first name more without prompting and with less shyness. He gave himself that moment of appreciation before tackling the problem of a half-crazed sire-to-be. He approached his gamma with caution.

Holding out his arms, he both kept the guy back and herded him in the direction of the sliding glass doors of the great room. “Come on, Craig. Time to work off some of this energy.” When the gamma eyed him with confusion, Lorcan gestured toward the doors. “Go shift and run around.”

When his gamma immediately sprang forward, Lorcan barely managed to get to the doors first. He opened them right before Craig shifted as he raced through the opening. Shit, that would have been a mess if the guy had jumped through the glass.
