Exponential thinking is a mind-set conception that is credited to Gordon Moore, cofounder of Intel®. In 1965, Moore predicted that the power of computing would increase and the cost of equipment would decrease exponentially. Moore also addressed the manner in which devices would become smaller yet more powerful due to a greater number of components being incorporated into integrated circuits.6 Of course, we are seeing this prediction materialize in the present technological revolution, as computing power in all forms is dramatically increasing while costs for producing and operating such technology are falling at an equally rapid pace. Devices as well are becoming more compact while performing a growing number of tasks that used to take multiple gadgets to accomplish; the obvious example here is the smartphone.
It is this very type of thinking that continues to feed the rapid growth of robots, AI systems, and other disruptive technologies. According to Dr. Peter Diamandis—a pioneer in the application of exponential thinking who has been recognized as one of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders, among a long resume of progressive and scientific accomplishments7—our brains are hardwired to think linearly, which makes it difficult to think in an exponential fashion. He provides this example of exponential thinking: “If I were to take 30 linear steps, it would be one, two, three, four, five. After 30 linear steps, I'd end up 30 paces or 30 meters away, and all of us could pretty much point to where 30 paces away would be. But if I said to you take 30 exponential steps, one, two, four, eight, sixteen, thirty-two and said where would you end up? Very few people would say a billion meters away, which is twenty-six times around the planet.”8 According to Dr. Diamandis and others like him, the disruptive stress that the world is experiencing is due to the majority of people who are still thinking linearly in the midst of an exponential rise in technology. This explains why companies that refuse to think in stride with current technological advances are the ones to fail against those that break the mold and expand their thinking, as well as their wealth and influence, in accordance with technological advances.
