Maloney was re-elected, narrowly escaping the red tide that even swept into “blue” New York state. Tim Bishop and Dan Maffei were defeated for re-election and the Republicans took control of the New York State Senate after having to share power for four years with a group of dissident Democrats.

After months of acrimony and millions of dollars in negative advertising, the Democratic incumbent held back the red tide.
