CAMILLA

Camilla cut her father a generous slice of her homemade rum cake, made from his mother’s recipe. It was his very favorite dessert. Then she cut a piece for her mother who assessed her suspiciously.

“Camilla Denise Anthony…” Her mother accepted the plate and fork, setting both on the table. She leaned back in her seat, with her arms folded. “What is going on?”

“What do you mean?” Cam cut another slice of cake for herself, not meeting her mother’s gaze.

“I mean, there’s something you want to tell us, but you feel the need to put us in a food coma first.” Her mother narrowed her gaze.

“Marianne, you’re overthinking this. Can’t you just relax and let me enjoy my favorite dessert?” her father grumbled as he put another slice of the moist, delicious cake in his mouth.

“Tell me I’m wrong.” Her mother stared across the table at her.

“Fine.” Cam sighed. “But it’s not a big deal or anything.”

“But it is something.” Her father raised a brow, but he didn’t allow it to interfere with him eating his rum cake.

Cam cleared her throat and sat up straight. “There’s a project Uncle Lou is offloading that I’d like to take on.”

“You’ve done that lots of times before.” Her father shrugged in between bites of his cake. “Why is this project different?”

“Because it would be bigger than any project I’ve ever taken on before. It’s not a single home or apartment building. It’s an entire neighborhood and a school, which we’ll convert into apartments.”

“That’s a pretty big project, Cam. Think you’re ready to take that on?” Her father met her gaze as he took another bite of cake.

“I’m definitely ready for this project,” she said assuredly as she poked her slice of cake with her fork.

“What does Uncle Lou think about Charming Home Design taking on that many projects all at once?” Her mother asked.

Camilla sucked in a deep breath. Damn, her mother knew her well. And she knew Uncle Lou well, too.

“Uncle Lou has some concerns about whether my team can manage this entire project on our own.”

“Or raise the cash for it, I’d assume.” Michael Anthony pointed his fork in her direction.

“And that,” Cammie conceded taking a bite of the moist, delicious cake.

“So exactly how much is this slice of cake gonna cost me?” Her father chuckled.

“Nothing, Dad. You’re out of the business. I know that, and I’d never try to drag you back in. Nor would I ask you for money.”

Her parents had a decent savings, but they weren’t quite sixty. As far as she was concerned, they had plenty of life ahead of them. So they’d need that money if they were to continue living comfortably.

Her father looked relieved, but her mother looked even more concerned. “If you’re not looking for an investor, what is it that you’re not telling us?” she asked.

Cam put down her fork. “Uncle Lou doesn’t believe I’m ready to handle a project this big on my own. Kai Arrington wanted to purchase it, but Uncle Lou doesn’t want to see this neighborhood gentrified.
