Chapter Twenty-Six

The Apothecary — The Next Day

“So you’re saying a werewolf brought you those flowers,” Kincaid repeated in disbelief.

The same incredulous look resided on Brigid’s face, but Rain pressed on anyway. “Yes, and he didn’t hurt me at all,” she said. “He didn’t even try. I think what happened to Tully Bovaird was an accident.”

Brigid scoffed loudly. “You can’t accidentally maul someone to death.”

“You feeling all right, Rain?” Kincaid asked. “Didn’t get a knock on the head last night?”

Damn, this was frustrating. She couldn’t tell them her plans without revealing Kieran’s secret, and there was no other way to convince them not to kill the werewolf. “Okay, listen. I’m going back up to the castle tonight,” she lied—hating herself for it, but the other option was to confess what she was going to do at the faerie circle. “I found out too much yesterday, a lot of conflicting information, so tonight I’m planning on narrowing it down. And then we can deal with the werewolf.”

By then, she hoped, he would already be dealt with.

Brigid and Kincaid shared a look, and it was Kincaid who apparently said what they were thinking. “Only it’s the full moon tonight, and Darragh Howley is planning to go after the beastie,” he said.

“We offered to help,” Brigid added. “There’s no way Darragh could fight something like that, so if we’re there, at least we can save him.”

“That is, if you’ve any idea how to actually stop a werewolf,” Kincaid finished.

Rain paused to think about it. This might work to her advantage—after last night, she was mostly convinced the werewolf wouldn’t hurt anyone else, and if they were on a wild goose chase with Darragh Howley, they wouldn’t worry about what she was doing.

“All right,” she said. “You don’t think Darragh is capable of fighting monsters, then?”

Kincaid flapped a hand. “Ach, he’s a right prat,” he said, and Rain almost smiled at the echo of her father’s description. “Wouldn’t hurt a fly, though. Not even a monster fly.”

“That’s true,” Brigid mused. “Makes me wonder why he decided to declare himself a werewolf slayer.”

Kincaid shrugged. “Like as not, he just wants the attention. His mum’s a beast.”

At least Rain had remembered right about Sorcha Howley. And once again, she had to wonder why her father was courting her, or whatever he was doing. He was normally a shrewd judge of character—right to the point of scary accuracy.

“Well, he’s getting it,” Brigid said. “Half the village already thinks he’s a bloody hero.”

Rain blinked at her. “Don’t hold back, Brigid. Tell us how you really feel.”

She laughed. “I feel like he’s going to get himself mangled if we’re not there to help, is all,” she said. “So how do we help?”

This was the tricky part, because she had told the truth about not having the right information. “All I know for sure,” she said, “is that silver will weaken or kill a werewolf. Apparently there is something to the old silver bullet myth. But since we don’t have a
