CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

KIRANA

The last several second moons had been quiet. No sign of Sage. For all her father knew, he was dead.

It was morning. The Olloketh crystals were glowing.

Sometimes, Kirana would sneak out from the new barracks that Father had had built and walk alone on the beach before anyone else awakened. She’d watch the light bend and ripple across the lake and let herself remember those who had died during the fall.

It was early. Father had insisted she speak with him.

She watched Father on the sands before the underground lake. He was doing one-armed push-ups. Sweat dripping from his brow with each completed effort.

He was nearly his former self. Nearly.

The other survivors were stirring in their tents, getting ready for their morning exercises, cooking fish from the lake, talking and conversing, laughing and smiling. Living as if all of this were normal. As if this were home. The smell and the sounds almost made her feel content, made her want to join them in their joy and their conversation; but these were the sounds and smells of a war camp. This was not home.

It made her heart ache every time she thought about Yce Ralakar... How thousands upon thousands of her brothers and sisters would never get the rites that they’d completed for Padros.

Once Father was finished, he got to his feet, patting the sand from his hand on his pants. He approached her, gesturing for the water jug next to her feet. She offered it up and he drank vigorously.

“It’s a new long day,” Kirana said.

“It is,” Father said.

“Will you be sending the scouts out again?” Kirana asked.

Her father wiped the sweat from his brow; the glow of the Olloketh crystals reflected hauntingly off his reflective coal skin. “Of course.”

Father started across the beach, heading for the war room where he spent most of his time now. Kirana followed him through the front doors.

The war table was filled with pieces now. Several daggers were stabbed into the map of Giridesh, radiating out from Mount Paronis’s peaks. Each was a Masku town or city. The pieces were meant to represent the scouts that had been sent to each point of interest. So far, twelve Valier were due to report back within the next couple second moons.

Many of them had already returned empty-handed.

“I’m worried, Father,” Kirana said.

“About?”

“Whether that traitorous bastard is even still alive.” Kirana wrung her hands together till she could feel the circulation cutting off.

“We will find him,” Father said. “And when we do, we will bring down on him the justice we deserve.”

Kirana nodded. Father knew best. If he thought there was a reason to keep searching, then that was enough for her.

“Where is your brother?” Father asked.

Kirana almost spat at the dirt. “Off meditating or something. He’s been sneaking off to be alone at night. I worry Dirkus’s lesson may not have gotten through to him.”

“I’m well aware.” Her father sighed and shook his head. He started toward his tent.

“He doesn’t listen to me, Father,” Kirana said, following after him.
