8 Done deal?

At 1 pm on 14 March 2007, Gunns issued a press release stating its intention to withdraw the pulp mill project from the Resource Planning and Development Commission (RPDC), the independent state government body assessing the project. Within 24 hours, Premier Paul Lennon had announced a recall of Parliament to fast-track the project. In a brief moment of daring, or panic, Lennon had turned a simmering controversy into a raging debate. It seemed as if every dark allegation about the power of Gunns had been laid bare for all to see. Speculation was rife that this had been a ‘done deal’, but examining such a serious claim is not an easy task. As with the Wesley Vale project, the activities of the main players were cloaked in Tasmania’s corporatist culture of secrecy, intrigue and powerful egos. But how far can this culture be penetrated for an answer?
