The UIMP network and the analytical method

The analytical process employed in this chapter will focus on categorizing the claims and arguments subscribed to by the UIMP network according to the above-mentioned three dimensions: distribution, recognition and participation. The UIMP network has its origin in the convergence of several groups from across Western Europe opposing high-speed railway (HSR) developments. Its foundational document is the Charter of Hendaye (2010). Subsequently, other groups opposing other types of infrastructures and megaprojects joined the network. As a consequence, some of the assertions contained in the documents must be considered in relation to opposition against HSR. Martinez-Alier et al. (2014, p. 40) describe the coalition as follows:

There is now a growing “European Forum against Imposed and Useless Projects” (Grands Projets Inutiles et Imposés). In 2012 it held its 2nd meeting with 8,000 participants against the planned airport of Notre Dame-des-Landes. This took place over five days in Brittany near Nantes from 7 to 11 July. The 3rd Forum was held in summer 2013 in Stuttgart, the site of a resistance movement against a grand, new, superfluous train station.2
