In 1964 Attorney General Stanley Mosk read this memo and forwarded it to Brown’s office. Administration aides read the report as well but took “no action on it”—Brown later testified—because “it confirmed findings they already had. My people didn’t regard it of significant importance to pass it along to me. My staff took care of it and never showed it to me. Perhaps they should have.” 25

A few days before the riots, Brown sat for an interview with the leading Greek-American paper in Greece, Ethnos. He told his interviewer that California was a wonderful state with a vibrant economy and model social structure. He made no mention of race relations or tensions in L.A. 26
