Chapter 6

Gin didn’t see what happened next. One moment she was struggling to get away from Top Dog’s grip, and the next…

The next thing she knew, she was on the ground again, her knee throbbing, and she was surrounded by Top Dog and the two stooges, but now they were on the ground with her—and they were out cold.

Huh?

“What happened?” she said, looking around. “That guy, he just—”

“We have to go,” Ryu said. He scooped her up in that effortless way again, tucking her head into his shoulder, one arm under her legs and the other around her back.

“Thanks. But you don’t have to do this. I can walk,” she said, not willing to admit she liked this. But she did, very much.

“You tried to make sure I could get away. This is the least I can do,” he said with a smile.

For a moment Gin was tempted to lean against Ryu’s hard chest and just close her eyes for a moment, but she didn’t dare—they didn’t have the time. “Thank you. Are they going to be out long enough for me to fill up?”

“With gasoline. Yes, I think so.”

“What about food? Do you want something to eat?”

He laughed, and she liked the way the sound vibrated through his body. “No, I need water,” he told her, and he almost sounded indulgent. “No food. But you should eat something.”

“Okay, let’s fill up and…fill up,” she said, looking up at him.

“You can leave me here and be on your way. It would be safer for you.”

“But your memory’s not completely back,” she reminded him. “Is it? It’s still not safe for you.”

“I can find my way, and it will all return soon enough. And once it is clear you no longer are traveling with me, they will no longer bother you.”

“Who are they? Are they really the men in black?” Gin had heard about them, of course, but this was the first time she had been face to face with any of them. With UFOIS, she’d encountered mystery men, but they hadn’t dressed like morticians. Or worn sunglasses in the middle of the night.

“They do not have the best interests of you or me at heart. And they will do anything they can to get what they want. At the moment, that is all I can remember.”

“I’ve heard of what they can do, and will do,” Gin said, sobering immediately. There was a good reason why UFOIS members were told to stay shy of the men except in large groups.

Finally they were back at Gin’s Jeep. “We have to push my car to the gas station. It’s not that far,” she told him. She signaled Ryu to let her down, which he did, slowly, letting her feet touch the ground. Her knee ached, but she’d get over it.

“Are you all right?” he asked. He stroked her cheek.

Gin looked up at him. Against the bright glaring light of the diner, his expression was hidden. “You didn’t have to come back for me,” she said.
