Oban sprang into motion through the morning. With every person or group who came and went out of the Whyte House, the tension levels in the town ratcheted up another level.
We had Meeksy take all the samples Iâd gathered and prepare them for exposure to the anomalies contained in Kilmelford. That meant we wouldnât have our most valuable healer with us when we left Oban, but it did mean we had one of the people I trusted most on the planet in charge of an experiment that could give us our first desperately needed breakthrough on the anomalies. On how they spread, how to fight them. Hell, if it took dosing people with mushrooms to cure the corruption, Iâd find every liberty cap hunter in all of Argyll to cultivate those magic wee shroomies in every field between here and Perthshire.
If only it were that simple.
Catrìona gathered everyone she could findâveterans of Blà r Ghaineamhain whoâd fought Lord Bawbag, survivors from the fight against the beithir in Connel, all our most experienced fighters, scouts, and healers.
And we sought anyone who had levelled Purifire past level seven or eight. We needed people who could create and hold a shield of the stuff if we had any hope of fighting a fucking forest.
Just the thought of it chilled me to the little ribosomes in my cells. There could be no doubt about it at allâthe corruption was spreading, and it was very literally taking root.
Rhona we sent to Iona to fetch Samuel, who had gone home for the night, expecting a day or so to wait for Finnâs return, and Ealasaid had gone with him.
Anyone who didnât fall into the above categories but had magical crafting ability or had experience with the ionadan-siubhail? They got sent out immediately with orders to stretch our network as far east as they could get before we had to march. Scout, who had sensed my growing anxiety through the bond sheâd not yet relinquished, came in with her own plan: she rallied the eagles to transport these crafters.
Every moment we could save, every hour of walking overland turned into a quick jump with ionadan-siubhailâthat could prevent the anomalous trees from further infecting the land around them.
And at this time of year when their pollen dusted the world around them yellow, the chances that the wind could be spreading the corruption farther afield with every passing second were too high for me to even attempt to comprehend. If I thought about it for too long, I would freeze up. Crawl under a duvet and wait for the heat death of the universe.
Okay, maybe not quite that dramatic, but this situation had gone from bad to worse, and then the âworseâ had caught a fucking arcane plague.
Despite the urgency of the moment, or perhaps because of it, while the rest of Oban prepared to march into battle, the six of us prepared to craft a mythical item I truly, fervently hoped was not a toilet.
It went unsaid that if
