I end up staying out with Skyler until sunrise. We talk and talk and she tells me about bands I’ve never heard of, and gossip I didn’t know about the town, and the secrets of the woods. She tells me to watch my step after a thunderstorm when the ground is wet and springy, because the skeletons stir. How anything whispered in the woods is remembered forever, so never say a secret when the trees might be listening. It reminds me of when I was little, before Amy, when I would roam the woods alone. When I felt like the trees themselves were my friends. It feels like coming home.

“How do you know all of this?” I’m a little breathless with awe at it all. With her.

“A friend told me,” she says with that sly smile. “And now I’m telling you.”
