Satan

Hell, Present Day

Abbadona was no better. Shortly after I had bandaged her up, the hallucinations had kicked in, along with a slew of other symptoms. My intent had always been to stay with her, but after seeing how vulnerable she was to the delusions that pulled at her mind, I realized she wouldn’t have survived on her own.

Especially since the rivers had called to her, too.

With her abilities weakened, the waters were taking advantage of the opportunity, knowing there was no one around to keep them in check. So much so that they even tried playing games with me. I wouldn’t stand for it, though, so with the help of Haborym and Nehema, I relocated Abbadona to my private quarters, where I could still keep watch over her but without any pestering from the rivers. It was the safest decision for both of us.

Except peace and quiet was hard to come by. Now that Kat had successfully escaped once, she was hell-bent on doing so again—and getting far beyond the bounds of Hell this time. The banging in the portal room was incessant. I was surprised she didn’t tire herself out.

After two full weeks of it, however, it was beginning to get on my nerves.

“Sir, I came to see how Abbadona is doing. Is there anything I can do?” Nehema asked, peeking her head inside my private quarters.

My head snapped up from the museum brochure I was analyzing. I had been thinking about Simon Price and his soon-to-be theft of the fourteenth sphere. Now my full attention was on her.

“Actually, yes.” I rose from my seat. “Stay here with Abbadona. It’s about time I take care of our unruly prisoner.”

I marched to the portal room and strode right through the invisible barrier of Kat’s cell to confront her face-to-face. “What do you want?”

She dropped her raised arms as she was preparing to bang against the wall again. “My freedom.”

“I’ve kept you down here for close to two decades. What makes you think I’m eager to be benevolent?”

She smirked. “Your recent change of heart.”

I smacked her across the face. She went flying to the ground.

Spitting out blood, she rubbed her jaw and leveled her gaze on me. “After all these years, don’t you know violence doesn’t intimidate me?”

I knelt in front of her. “Yes, that’s why I decided to let you rot.”

Her shackles jangled as she crossed her arms. “And I am content to rot. But I am not willing to let my sacrifice go in vain. All those years ago, I willingly followed Lucifer down here, knowing there was a good possibility I would never leave again. I did so because what he and Lilith had planned would completely destroy the world as we know it, throwing it into evil and darkness.”

“What’s wrong with that?” I joked.

“There was no place for you in it. They had every intention of usurping your throne and making you suffer a long, painful death.”

My anger was boiling beneath the surface. But she didn’t need to see that.
