Once, on the first page of a novel written by an air force pilot and bon vivant, as a kind of epigraph (but an epigraph by the author himself; which to him, such a fan of opening his books with a collection of the words of others, extracting epigraphs from them lingchistically, as if they were layers of ideas, had seemed to him a gesture of admirable and enviable pride: being able to compose perfect and quotable lines to introduce ones that wouldn’t be quite so perfect or quotable but that you had to acknowledge as your own and as possible epigraphs for others) he had read that a moment came in life when you realized that it’d all been a dream. And that only the things you preserved in writing would have any possibility of being real, of remaining on this side of the ocean.

That was a little bit like—though not alone and manning an F-86 Sabre hunting MIGs, but merely one among hundreds, strapped into seat 3C inside the dilated intestines of an Airbus A320—he felt now.

As if he were so far from shore and with no strength left, as if he were cutting himself slowly, as if he were going under and almost drowning, as if he were fragmenting, as if he were dreaming himself deeply, because he’d lost his gift for inventing himself across the surface of reality.

And—cut and drawn and bloody and bound for a bottom from which there was no coming back with his pockets full of broken stones—here came another fragment about fragments.

A fragment that engaged and disengaged with his now nonexistent country of origin.
