I lie awake, half expecting Rebecca or Macy or someone else to burst through the door to tie me up. If Gavin wants to stop me, that’s all he has to do. I touch the spot in my neck where the last syringe stuck me, imagining it again. Gavin just has to tell them, and it’s all over. He knows if I get close to Impetus again, I won’t stop. I’ll go there.

But he also knows, like I do, that if Revival discovers my intentions, I’ll be severely punished. I doubt they’d keep me around. Not after everything they’ve taught me. I’m too knowledgeable about their practices now. That’s the risk that has emerged on both sides. Gavin sees it too. He promised he would protect me, and I don’t doubt that. Despite everything we’ve been through, I know he keeps his promises. And I know deep down, it’s the reason he still holds things back from me. His central motivation is protecting me. The waters just got murkier than anyone could have predicted along the way.

Even though that makes me want to soften toward him, I can’t. This is life we’re talking about. I would give mine if it meant saving others. If he knew anything about me, he’d realize that.

I just need more help. I can’t do it alone. I tried that last time I went back to Impetus, and learned the dangers. I have to motivate my Rebirth people to back me. And maybe, if we can indeed tap into intuition or precognition, we can remain two steps ahead of Revival.

Crawling out of bed, I tiptoe to the door as if people are listening to my movements. I pull on the edge of my paper, lifting the entire document out from behind the baseboard. I hide the map in my pants against my stomach. The paper is cool and scratchy, but it’s the best place for me to conceal it until I arrive at Rebirth. I’ll have to forgo my last hot shower, but this is more important. I’m sure my bag will be scanned and checked prior to leaving. This map cannot be confiscated.

I can’t believe I’m seeing Marlena, Liam, and everyone else soon. I wonder what they’ve thought about me being gone. If they’ve been searching for me. It’s only been a few weeks since they took me, but so much has shifted since then that a part of me fears what it’ll feel like returning.
