CHAPTER TWENTY

Ilooked at the four beings and wondered what questions I could ask. I had more than three questions in mind, but what if I asked a question they couldn’t answer? Would that mean I lost out on that question?

As if reading my mind, Ponponroo added, “Worry not. If we cannot answer your question, you may ask another until three questions have been satisfied.”

I nodded in thanks to the alien being.

“What is the reason for the Transformation? You mentioned something about stagnation and destruction?”

Ponponroo nodded sagely at me.

“That is correct. And the only reason we will answer three of your questions is, ages ago, it was decreed that if a species was able to detect our Transformation Beacon, we would answer three questions, within our limit that we can answer them.”

“Transformation Beacon? That’s the energy below the City-States?”

Ponponroo quirked an eyebrow. “Is that one of your questions?”

Shit. I shook my head vehemently. I would just assume that is what that energy under our cities are. Transformation Beacons.

“How do I stop the monsters on my world from getting stronger and destroying my world?”

It wasn’t Ponponroo who answered that time, but the gaseous creature named Illilli.

“I can answer that one. There is nothing you can do. The Transformation must run its course.”

With some anger in my tone, I growled out, “But that means my people might die.”

“As that was not a question, I shall ignore it,” Illilli uttered.

I held my anger in check. These people were playing Gods, causing the deaths of who knew how many races.

“Might I ask the next question?” Aria asked me.

I looked at my blue-haired partner and nodded that she could.

“Who are you that you have the power to create this Transformation?”

All four on the panel looked at each other, not answering her question at first, but finally, Illilli cleared their throat, and coming from a gaseous being it sounded more like air passing through a tube.

“We have never had that question asked from a recipient, but our laws do not forbid it. As such, I will answer you, but there is some information I cannot give. Ages ago, so long that even our records are vague on it, a powerful being saw that our universe was stagnating and that stagnation was going to cause the universe to go through a dark time, causing an untold number of deaths of worlds. So, they created the power source that then created those with special abilities.”

“We call them Superpowers in my world,” I interjected.

Illilli nodded, or I assumed that was what the gaseous ball that I assumed was its head, as it had no eyes or mouth, was doing as it moved up and down.

“There are many names for them. Superpowers, abilities, gifts, talents. There are many words for it. As for who we are, we are the Custodians. We were selected to watch over the Transformation and make sure that we, as a universe, do not go down the dark path.”

I frowned. From what I understood, they were not
