King Nazzarâs eyes opened. He just laid there in his bed looking out of the window. The sun shone its light, which lit the entire chamber. He coughed then. Something in him was not right. He hadnât felt right for a month, but he stood up and thanked God that he was still alive, still in his right mind. He was now a strong sixty-five years, but he felt that he was about to be weakened; and he feared that for many reasons. Not for himself, but for what might happen afterwards.
Box, the Kingâs personal servant, and had been for twenty years, came into the room to prepare his King for the day. The King called him over, after he had sat up on the edge of the bed, and said, âGo get the physician, and be quiet about it. No one is to know.â
Box looked worried. âNo one sire?â
âNo even my son and not Aeron.â He reported. âNow go, and be quick.â
Forty minutes later, the physician was examining him in the privacy of his room. The doors were shut and the guards had strict orders not to let anyone in. The King submitted to the examination by the strange instruments of healing, and then when it was all over, the physician revealed the diagnosis.
âYou must have a hole in your lungs, because there is fluid there.â He was putting his equipment back in his bag. âI could drill a hole in your side and into the lungs to drain it, but I think it would cause more problems in the long run; and you would be in much pain for the rest of your life, after that.â
âIs that the only solution?â
âI am afraid so, your majesty. Itâs all I can think of.â
King Nazzar settled back down in his bed. âDo me a favor, and find Aeron, and send him to me. Box, I will need your help to get me dressed, because I do intend to oversee to my duties today as always.â
The physician bowed and left. Box came over and dressed the King in his daily tunic and robes. As he had finished, Aeron was brought into the chamber.
After the door to the chamber was shut, King Nazzar turned to him and asked, âDid he tell you what is happening?â
âHe told me the result, my lord.â Aeron responded. âAre you sure you should be up and around today sire? Me and Naymor should be able to handle the business at hand.â
King Nazzar stood on his feet, feeling proud and majestic; he also felt old, but he was trying not to let that part show. âI will work until my death here in this realm, and I see the fields of the glorious lands beyond. My heart and soul is settled on this. Besides, Naymor is not yet ready to be King. He still trusts in his youthful passions, which are not the best for the Kingdom. I fear, the strange teachings of his mother are stirring within him.â
