Thirty seconds before the first mine exploded, the Red Menace slipped out the rear door of the large chalet-style mansion and crossed the stone patio.

He moved in silence, the soles of his shoes making not a sound until he reached the marble railing. There was only a slight scuff as he went up and over, and a soft sound as he dropped into the planting bed beside the patio.

None of the exterior lights on the house were on, nor did any light shine out from the ground floor windows, so there was nothing to backlight the figure in mask and cloak as he darted across the wide lawn in the direction of the woods.

It was safe to trod anywhere only a certain distance from the house, and after that he had to be certain where he stepped. Of course, he knew what his enemies did not.

The mines were not strictly legal, but so much of the activity engaged in by the Red Menace on behalf of king and country did not conform to the letter of the law. It was the promise of America he fought to preserve, by any means necessary. The mines were inactive until armed, and sweeping the grounds for them would be futile thanks to Wainwright, who had invented the unique, undetectable devices. He’d leave it up to Simon Kirk and MIC to worry about any bodies.

The landscapers were under orders to maintain the forest as well as the grass and flower beds, and so there were no fallen branches or rocks on which to stumble. Even the trees were thinned and the deadwood trimmed away, so that the entire area looked almost like a movie set of fake trunks spaced apart from one another with yardstick care.

He saw the first figure creeping through the trees, and when he realized he had counted off enough paces from the house, the Red Menace stopped dead.

The air slipped silently from his lungs and he waited. One second, two seconds.

The blast came in a horrible flash that lifted the body in the air and flung the dead man to fragments around the woods. The Red Menace felt the vibrations from the blast, but the sound was muted. It was the noise of a stick of dynamite, but TNT that was buried deep beneath earth so that only a suggestion of the terrible force that had torn a man apart like a paper doll reached the surface.

The formula Wainwright used for his mines made the devastation wrought all the more horrifying for the near-silence in which it was delivered.

Only once the first man went up did the Menace realize that the killers closing in on his house were armed with flame throwers. Small fires from the ruptured tank spread across the ground and up the trunks of nearby trees, and he knew that the
