Chapter 12

The elevator rose with a soft purr. It was a private car, generally used by only one man. The air conditioning was turned up high and the vent that carried the recirculated air to the small elevator car blew directly down the back of his shirt.

Ernst Junker shivered, but did not complain about the cold. The two fit young men who stood at silent attention on either side of the elderly engineer did not strike him as accommodating sorts, and he did not think either one would change places with him under the vent even if he asked them very nicely.

The car was lined with glass and he saw the lobby slowly shrink below his feet. No one came into the empty lobby through the main door. There was no receptionist, nor even a reception desk. One of the men had unlocked the front door with what looked like a plastic card. There had to have been some kind of magnetic strip on the side of the card which a sensor recognized, because a green light had come on and the door had opened as if by magic. It was a technology Ernst Junker had never before seen, but there was much that was baffling Ernst Junker this day.

Junker had not seen much of the outside world since the men had taken him into their custody back at his favorite fishing hole.

They had brought him by helicopter to the parking lot of an abandoned motor lodge where he was transferred to a car and then driven for what seemed like forever.

All the men who had taken him would say was that Dr. Junker would be taking a plane ride. They would not tell him the destination.

These kidnappers were apparently covering their tracks and did not want to be seen taking a plane out of Billings. Junker knew for certain that was their plan when he saw the sign at the side of the highway that announced to motorists that they were leaving Montana. A sign soon after welcomed Ernst Junker to Wyoming.

A small jet was waiting at the airport in Sheridan.

Junker hoped that the pilot would announce where the plane was taking him, but the aircraft had simply taxied to the runway and taken off with no instructions from the captain about seatbelts or oxygen masks. There were no stewardesses. Junker asked several times on the flight where he was being taken and why but was met with stony silence from his companions.

When the plane had finally landed, the former NASA engineer stepped out into heat so searing and light so blinding that Junker thought the private jet had landed on the surface of the sun.

His escort had trundled him into the back of a car, and on the drive from the airport he caught a glimpse of a digital thermometer on the outside of a bank. It was one hundred and twelve degrees according to the Phoenix First Municipal Savings Bank. Not quite as hot as the sun’s
