A strong wind off the Pacific smothered the sound of the approaching helicopter. The lights had been visible since it had lifted off from shore, but the only clue that the aircraft was heading towards him were the lights, which grew larger and brighter as the dark shape closed in.
There was a sudden shift in the wind and the muted chop of the rotor blades, which he had only become dully aware of, suddenly roared to life in his eardrums.
The helicopter had obviously radioed ahead, for there came from another deck somewhere high above a sudden brilliant flash as the helipad lights switched on.
It was a shock to see the helicopter suddenly illuminated in the night sky, and a shock as well to see how small it was compared to the ship onto which it descended.
The chopper settled to the deck and disappeared beyond his line of sight. The lights were doused as quickly as they came on, and the only proof that remained of a safe landing in the dead of night was the soft whoosh of the slowly dying rotor blades.
Junior Grade Ensign Stan Morrix waited on the deck in the dark.
The events at Petit Perfumes had been harrowing, the hours since the masked manâs escape a frantic blur.
The caravan trip up the coast, the secret commune, the men hustling him into the speedboat and racing him out here, over a mile offshore.
Morrix didnât do well on water. Frankly, he didnât used to do all that well on land. When he was under daily pressure as a stockbroker in New York, he used to take a handful of Dramamine just to get through the workday. If he hadnât discovered the truth of the Realtopian Church of America in a one-minute TV commercial during the late, late show, heâd have been dead of a heart attack by forty. That was all gone now. He had taken to his managerial position in the church like a fish to water, and ever since graduating to the level of ensign, he hardly ever felt the floor moving under his feet.
But boats were another story. Morrix felt the thin gruel of rice and vegetable juices he was allowed for his two daily meals rolling in the pit of his stomach. He wished he had the bottle of motion sickness medication he used to keep stashed in his desk at his old firm back in New York, but he had left it behind with his old life.
Although the only light that reached the ship came from the stars above or from the big houses on the distant shore, Morrix still got the sense of a huge drop down the invisible side of the big boat to watery oblivion. He had been taken aboard through a door far below, and had taken several flights of steps and an elevator to reach the deck that now rose and fell with every wave far beneath his feet.
Morrix hoped he wouldnât get the opportunity to see firsthand how far the drop really was.
