CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Eyes on the target, but I can’t make out his face,” Brock voiced.

Since none of them had met Ivanov in person, they’d had to rely on the still shots from the video Wicked_1 sent us.

They’d sent Brock, Bryce, Payton, Juarez, and Jace. The rest of us had to stay at the hotel and bite our nails.

“Remind me again why we couldn’t just wait on Schäfer and Nordholm to confirm his arrival since it’s their assigned base he’s supposedly going to?” Bryce drawled.

“Because,” I explained, “we need to give them as much of a heads-up as possible so they can make discrete preparations before he arrives. If they wait until he’s there, he might notice and have them killed right off the bat.”

“Hold on,” Juarez commanded. “I’m moving to a better angle.”

The decision to send a small team had ultimately been made by Juarez who decided that less people meant less notice. On the same hand, it risked losing the chance to confirm Ivanov’s identity if he slipped through their much smaller net.

Duane twisted and placed a kiss atop my head. I scooted closer to his calming presence to help soothe some of my nerves. If they couldn’t positively identify this flight as Ivanov’s, we would be in limbo again, faced with the heavy decision to risk blowing everything on the off chance that Ivanov was in Frankfurt.

“It’ll be okay, Babygirl. Have faith in our team. They would rather lose a leg than let you down.”

I nodded, spinning and dipping my hand in my lap so much that my skin pinkened from the abrasive twine bracelet. “It’s just that Ivanov is so…”

“We know. They’ll get that confirmation.”

Juarez’s voice came back on the comms. “In position. If he just turns his head a tiny bit, I’ll have his profile.”

“Great, because the only thing I’ll see is the top of his umbrella. My spot is less than stellar.” Bryce gave a haughty sniff. “I think I stepped in gum.”

“Come on, man. Buck up, boyo,” Duane encouraged him. “We’re doing this for Callie.”

“Ah, yes, Callina. Hmph. I guess I can suffer through some more.”

“Hold on, he just turned. It was a millisecond, but he turned.” Juarez’s excitement trickled through the line. “I don’t know if I was fast enough with the camera or not. Sending the photo now.”

With bated breath, we watched as the file downloaded. It seemed to take forever, but a second later the still popped up.

“It’s blurry,” CJ told them in an apologetic tone. He glanced at me and turned the laptop for a better angle. “How well do you know him?”

Blurry was an understatement to describe the shot. He’d turned so fast that the photo looked as if it’d been one of those motion effects where the photographer left the shutter open to catch a light trail.

“I…”

So much rested on this call that I found myself hesitant to answer.

“Don’t worry, dušo. I’ve got you. Bryce, Payton, be ready. He’s about to turn his head this way.”

“What?” Payton asked. “Brock
